Stars signs on for ‘Giant for life’ deal

GIANTS’ star swingman Harry Himmelberg has signed a six-year contract extension with the club, becoming a Giant for life.

The 27-year-old defender-turned-forward-turned-defender again has proven himself as one of the most dynamic players in the competition over his 145 games so far, kicking 160 goals across his career.
Born in Wagga Wagga and joining the Giants Academy as a teenager, before playing for Ainslie in the AFL Canberra competition, Himmelberg has been a Giant since day one.
“It’s a mixture of relief and excitement,” Himmelberg said.
“It was always going to head down this path for me.
“We’re heading in the right direction. I knew this team was moving in the right direction and the last seven or eight weeks is testament to that.”
Giants General Manager of Football, Jason McCartney, said Himmelberg’s commitment was a significant milestone for the club, which had begun a new era under Adam Kingsley this season.
“Harry’s versatility as a player has never been more on show than this season when he’s kicked important goals, taken incredible marks and then switched to defence where he’s been ultra-consistent,” McCartney said.
“He’s also continued to grow as a leader and is part of our emerging leaders’ group, which is a great reflection of his value to our club.”
THEY fought hard to the death but the GWS Giants’ seven-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Swans, 15.6 (96) to 12.13 (85), in a drizzly Sydney Derby XXVI on Saturday.
The deadly-accurate Swans kicked 11 goals without a miss in the first half – from just 23 inside 50s – to bankroll the win, and held firm as the Giants made an inevitable run in the second half.
The Swans worked hard to limit Toby Greene but the Giants skipper still finished with three goals.
The Giants’ defence, which had not conceded more than 75 points in their previous seven matches, had almost no time to set up.
They gained repeat entry after repeat entry, and kept the scoreboard ticking, but trailed by 18 at the half.
They then made a late run in the fourth quarter with successive goals to Callan Ward and Greene to get within six points, but a snap steadied the ship for the Swans as they held on to win.
Tom Green (38) was fantastic in his first game back from injury, while Stephen Coniglio, Kieren Briggs and Toby Bedford were also strong contributors.
The Giants next take on Port Adelaide on Sunday from 4.40pm at Adelaide Oval.
