Lidcombe’s Cumberland Basketball Centre received $9,999 in last year’s funding round to host gala days for girls only, with a former Olympian acting as trainer.
General Manager Dawn Burke said it was one of the best things they could have done and were very grateful for the support.
She said it would help them achieve their goal of introducing basketball to more girls and increase female participation in general.
“That’s an area we struggle in and these funds will help enormously,” she said.
“I would definitely encourage other clubs to put in a funding application; I’ve already been telling others, including the group that manages the local tennis courts because it’s such a great opportunity.”
In 2022/23, $3.5 million was awarded for 592 projects, including funding to create a pathways program, an all-abilities program, instal an electronic scoreboard, locker room and accessible toilet repairs, to cover the purchase of portable marquees, new uniforms and sporting equipment, and to host clinics and events plus more.
Applications in the 2023/24 Local Sport Grant Program close on November 27.
