Special day for Greeks on offer

CANTERBURY Bankstown’s strong Greek community will be honoured this Greek Independence Day (March 25), with a special flag-raising ceremony and morning tea.

A Greek band, bouzouki players, traditional dancers and a delicious variety of Greek foods will also mark the celebration at Earlwood Senior Citizens Centre from 8.45am-noon.
Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said Canterbury-Bankstown’s strong and vibrant Greek community was very much a part of this City’s rich, diverse culture.
“We’re lucky to have so many different cultures to celebrate in CBCity and on March 25, we’ll be raising the Greek flag in honour of our wonderful Greek community,” Mayor El- Hayek said.
“The Greek community has given so much to our world and indeed our City.
“With Earlwood being home to the most Greeks in Australia, it is only fitting that we celebrate their national day here.”
Earlwood is the largest Greek suburb in Australia, with more than 7,000 residents of Greek ancestry.
Greek Independence Day marks the anniversary of Greece’s revolution and war of independence more than 200 years ago, in 1821.
