Soccer star joins Saints

JUST like the greats Maradona, Pele and Ronaldo, Ernesto Meduri learnt to play football on the streets before starting his playing career as a 15-year-old in Italy for his city’s home team, Salernitana FC.

Nearly half a century later ahead of taking up the post of Technical Director at Regents Park Saints Football Club, he looks back at the those early years where he was described as a future champion.
“We would be playing footy on the street from morning until night when your mama would call, saying supper is ready,” he said.
“There was no Playstation or other distractions so everyone gave their best to football.”
After moving to Australia aged 22, Ernesto continued his career with APIA Leichhardt before progressing to State League with the Canterbury Association.
In 1995, he began playing in the First Grade division, Over 35s for Inter Lions FC and only hung up his boots last year to concentrate on coaching.
As an accredited FA coach for more than 30 years, Ernesto brings a wealth of knowledge to Regents Park.
“We look forward to working together to create an environment that helps our players develop their full potential,” a club spokesperson said.
At the first training day, Ernesto was impressed to discover over 35 players in the X League (the top tier local Men’s Seniors competition) alone.
“It’s such a good sign and many are very talented,” he said.
“We’ll be able to field three teams; first grade, reserve and 18s-19s.”
There will also be trials over the next month for U6s-U17s, males and females, on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6.30-8.30pm, at Princes Park, Auburn.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for young people as I make it fun but also encourage discipline and respect,” he said.
“I am keen to make a difference at such a great club in a beautiful area; I’m really looking forward to helping build up the club and sharing in its success.”
