Snakes slithering in to mate alert

AUBURN born Sydney Snake Catchers’ Rob Ambrose is warning residents to be on the lookout as hopeful friends slither in for their Spring breeding season.

Australia is home to 20 of the 25 most venomous snakes in the world, including all of the top 11.
The world’s most venomous snake, the Inland Taipan, is found nowhere else on Earth. It’s also called the Fierce Snake, and carries enough venom in a single bite to kill around 250,000 mice.
Rob said he’s starting to get a lot of “freaked out calls”.
“Sometimes it’s only a Blue Tongue Lizard that they’ve seen but the Red-bellied Black Snake is the most common in Cumberland and you also get Eastern Browns, Death Adders, Brown Tree Snakes, Eastern Tiger Snakes, Diamond Pythons and Golden Crowns.”
He said it was common to find snakes creeping into properties near the railway line and in and around Clyde and the Duck River area.
“All animals should be treated with care and respect,” he said.
“Snakes are a natural part of the ecosystem and play a part in keeping things in balance but it’s important to keep children and pets away if you see one and keep an eye on where it goes, then call our team immediately.”
They will only attack humans if hurt or provoked and most bites occur when people try to kill or capture them.
If you get bitten, call 000 and wait for an ambulance, stay calm, apply pressure to the bite but don’t wipe the wound as the venom will help identify the snake.
