School zones are in place 8-9.30am and 2.30-4pm, and motorists who don’t obey the rules, face heavy fines and demerits.
Deputy Secretary of Safety, Environment and Regulation at Transport for NSW, Sally Webb, appealed to drivers to “please help us ensure our children’s safety by observing the school zone speed limits”.
“Children are some of our most vulnerable road users and can be unpredictable around roads,” she said.
“I’m reminding motorists to not only obey the rules in school zones but also take extra care around bus stops, school crossings and drop off and pick up areas where children are often present in higher numbers.
“Also please remember that when you see bus lights flash, you must slow down to 40km/h, the flashing lights mean the bus is picking up or dropping off children. Road safety is a shared responsibility, please take care and follow the rules to help protect our children.”
Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden, warned “those selfish individuals who think they can blatantly disregard the road rules and put the broader community at risk are on notice”.
“We are asking every person who gets behind the wheel of a motor vehicle or hops on a motorcycle, to be responsible and do everything they can to keep themselves, their passengers and other road users safe.”
