Siblings in smashing form at Show with champion flowers, cakes, veg

MERRYLANDS siblings Robyn and Gregory East have done it again, winning Champion Miniature Rose as well as a trophy for their African Violets at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and coming second overall in aggregate points in the horticulture section.

The St Peter Chanel Catholic Primary School teacher, Robyn, says it’s the 20th year they have taken part but Greg only returned home from hospital the Thursday before the Show after having major surgery and being in rehabilitation since January.
“Within an hour and a half of him returning home, he had his cakes underway and worked through the night,” Robyn said.
Greg scored first prize for his banana cake, third prize for his rich fruit cake and muffins and highly commended for his macaroons while Robyn came second in the rich fruit cake category, highly commended for her sultana cake and muffins.
They also achieved first prizes for their zucchini, Swiss chard and onions, second for their marrow and third for their eggplant and herb garden.
Robyn was thrilled to see her students win highly commended in the primary produce section and former student Bridget Dang, now in Year 9, named the supreme champion in the children’s exhibit, winning for her Asian cooking garden and herb garden as well as all the cactus and succulents categories.
“I taught her everything she knows,” Robyn said.
“I am extremely proud of the students and especially proud of Greg.
“He was determined to exhibit in this year’s Show but had to really cut it fine.”
Next up before a good rest, Robyn is representing her Greystanes branch of the Country Women’s Association at the State Finals on May 1 in the scones category.
