Shooting death ‘targeted’

POLICE believe the shooting death of a man in Factory Street, Granville, that shattered a quiet Sunday afternoon for nearby residents, was a targeted attack.

Xiao Zhao, 44, was found by police just before 4.30pm on Sunday, June 11, suffering a gunshot wound, and despite the efforts of paramedics, died at the scene.
Cumberland Police Commander, Superintended Andrew Holland, said the man was known to police and although they didn’t know the links to organised crime at this stage, the meeting between the two groups would suggest it was a targeted attack.
“It would appear that two groups of Asian males have met at the location, a shot has been fired at some point, and the male is now deceased,” he said.
As part of inquiries, officers responding to the shooting, stopped a Toyota Camry on Railway Parade, and arrested two male occupants, aged 31 and 37.
Two firearms and two magazines were recovered after allegedly being discarded from the vehicle.
The younger man was charged with two counts of possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in public place, while the older man was charged with police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously.
No charges have been laid in relation to the shooting and the investigation is continuing.
