Canterbury SES Commander Lenore Nelson said that while the area wasn’t heavily impacted by the rains last week, she warned against complacency and urged people never to enter floodwaters for any reason.
“If it’s flooded, forget it,” she said.
“Find another way around, and don’t put your life at risk.”
Residents can help minimise damage to their homes by trimming overhanging branches and ensuring gutters, down pipes and drains are clear, move vehicles undercover and away from trees and secure any loose items around the home, including anything sitting on balconies.
In the event of storm or flood emergencies, call the SES on 132 500 or if the situation is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000).
