SES chief urges all to plan for storm season

THE NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) has urged residents to be prepared and have a plan in place, ahead of the storm season.

Volunteers at the SES Canterbury Unit have been busy readying themselves in preparation for the storm season which officially begins on October 1.
Although the long range forecast has Australia experiencing a hotter and drier storm season than usual, severe storms can impact with limited warning, causing damage to property and putting lives at risk.
The biggest impact on the Canterbury Bankstown area has mainly been damage as a result of falling trees and branches, and leaking roofs, while there is also a significant flash flood risk from the Cooks and Georges rivers.
Unit Commander Chris Nelson said residents could help protect themselves this storm season by:
• Maintaining their yard and balcony, securing objects that could blow away in strong winds;
• Cleaning their gutters and downpipes to prevent blockages;
• Trimming trees and branches that could fall on their property;
• Fix any roof damage such as missing or cracked tiles or engage a qualified tradesperson to effect repairs;
• Ensure their insurance policy is current; and
• Make a home emergency plan and kit.
Last year Canterbury SES responded to 573 callouts including 47 flood rescues.
Mr Nelson said they had 71 volunteers but were always on the lookout for more.
“The NSW SES is a highly flexible service that has a role for everyone,” he said.
“From operating a chainsaw, getting up on a roof, rescuing people from floods, training and developing new volunteers, to working behind the scenes in the Incident Management Room, Canterbury SES truly does have a role for everyone regardless of age or physical fitness.”
