Service to remember train disaster victims

A MEMORIAL service and wreath-laying ceremony was held to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of the Granville Train Disaster on Saturday, January 18.

The worst rail disaster in Australian history, 84 people died, including an unborn child, with another 213 people injured during the 1977 crash.
The derailment of the crowded commuter train into the Bold Street bridge crushed two carriages, resulting in a complex rescue operation that lasted nearly 31 hours and had lasting consequences for the response to disasters in NSW.
The family and friends of those who lost their lives joined survivors, rescuers, dignitaries and representatives of the emergency services at the event.
