With the service hosted by Lidcombe RSL Sub Branch-Chairman Steve Yang, participants paid tribute to the sacrifices made by those who fought for peace and laid flowers in their memory before sharing a complimentary lunch at Dooleys Regents Park Sports Club.
“Close to one million Australians served in the armed forces during World War II, with over 30,000 taken prisoner and 39,000 never returning home,” Mr Yang said.
“On the morning of August 15, 1945, the Emperor of Japan announced that his country would accept the Allies’ ultimatum to surrender, signifying the end of World War II.
“We meet to honour the courage, sacrifice and selflessness of those veterans who made this possible.”
