Principal Amanda Gahan said it was a project they had been planning for a long time in partnership with the local parish and St Vincent De Paul.
“The community donated bread and sandwich fillings and parent and teacher volunteers made the sandwiches on the day before going out in the evening and dispersing them to battling communities,” she said.
“As well as donating the sandwiches we supplied blankets and snack packs.
“There were about 100 recipients and they were all extremely grateful.”
Hoping to hold their ‘night patrol’ once a month, Amanda said last Sunday they had three teachers and two parents but now there are about 50 more parents wanting to help.
“We envision involving the children in the sandwich-making on a Sunday afternoon before the goods are delivered later by the adults,” she said.
“We are very pleased to get this project off the ground and believe it is a win win for all involved.”
St Peter Chanel is also seeking donations of non-perishable food, sleeping bags, blankets, scarves, beanies, gloves, nappies, toiletries and snack items such as chips, poppers and noodles for St Vincent De Paul’s ‘Fill the Van’ fundraiser.
They can be dropped off at the school on any weekday or on Sunday, June 6, when the ‘van’ – which goes out nightly to feed the homeless – will be in the church carpark on Kingsland Road, Berala, from 7.30pm.
Cash donations are tax deductible.
