Schools join forces to solve local challenges

CANTERBURY Boys High School and Canterbury Girls High School have joined forces to launch an exciting STEM project aimed at fostering collaboration, problem-solving and creative skills among students.

The project, designed to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in senior studies, will see students tackle challenges and devise innovative solutions to local issues such as the Canterbury Light Rail construction and the redevelopment of Canterbury Racecourse and Ice Rink.
The program, spanning eight weeks in Term 3, began with an Orientation Day where students formed teams and outlined project plans, with regular face-to-face and online meetings planned over the next two months.
Also fostering partnerships with local businesses and organisations, the project will culminate in a presentation day showcase.
During the event launch, huge supporter of the project and Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs Deputy Chairman John Khoury advised students to persevere and innovate, and shared personal success stories as well as his infectious passion for STEM fields.
“Collaboration and teamwork are key to any successful project,” he emphasised in his speech.
“Stay curious, think creatively and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.”
Canterbury Boys High School Principal Ross Dummett said the schools were committed to preparing students for the future.
“This joint STEM project with Canterbury Girls High, is a prime example of how we are equipping our students with the skills and experiences that will serve them well,” he said.
“By working together on real-world challenges, our students are not only enhancing their problem-solving and critical thinking abilities but are also learning the value of teamwork and community engagement.”
