With the funds made available through the 2024 Inspire Grants Program supported by the St.George Foundation, therapists from KidsXpress, an organisation specialising in trauma-informed education, will help overcome barriers to academic achievement faced by the school’s nearly 600 students, many of whom are from refugee backgrounds and non-English speaking homes.
Delivered on-site, the KidsXpress program includes expressive therapy, teacher development, individual education plans and tailored parenting programs.
Principal Bronwyn York said the therapists would enable more students to receive the social and emotional support they needed on a regular basis.
She said students already knew teachers and the school counsellor were there to support them but it was great to have specialist therapists shoulder-to-shoulder with them, adding their expertise.
“Their support is also available to our parents and carers after school. This is an added bonus as accessing therapy support outside of school can be very costly and beyond what many of our families can afford,” Mrs York said.
“It does ‘take a village’ to raise a child. When corporate companies show practical support by funding an organisation like KidsXpress, who partner with us as a public school, then together we all contribute to raising the children of our community – no matter what socio-economic challenges our families faces.
“My sincere thanks to the St.George Foundation for your ‘investment’ in our children.”
