School way to reduce waste

AFTER learning about the problems associated with fast fashion and how much discarded clothing is sent to landfill in Australia each year – over 23kg a person – Georges River Grammar’s Future Problem-Solving Team wanted to take immediate action.

Gifted and Talented Facilitator Jenny Chisholm said Year 8 students devised a plan to create their own GRG Clothing Drive and Pop-Up stall where unwanted clothing could be resold.
“We had loads of staff and students visit the stall and all proceeds totalling $200 were donated to @thegirlsrefuge and @youthoffthestreets came to collect four boxes of clothing and accessories that were not sold,” she said.
“The students in this group, Katelyn Dancy, Isla Fraser, Madeleine Hulme, Aishra Khadka and Edmalia Neloe, worked incredibly hard to plan and implement this initiative in a short timeframe.
“Their dedication and commitment to the successful clothing drive and pop-up stall was admirable during the last full week of school.
“At GRG, we have many high potential and talented students who are acutely tuned into the many global issues facing society today. They are always looking for ways in which they can have a positive impact and give back to our community.
“We will be entering an additional team in the Future Problem Solving Program in 2024, and I look forward to facilitating initiatives to benefit the wider community, based on the global problems that students feel passionate about exploring further.”
