Launching their own War on Waste (WOW) campaign, Campsie Public School is going all out to try and create habits in the school to reduce the amount of school waste that goes into landfill.
After successfully obtaining a Sustainable Schools Grant from the NSW Department of Education, Relieving Deputy Principal Andrew Fox and teacher Abbie Messiter started the awareness and education phase of their project, getting students to watch episodes from the TV series ‘War on Waste’ and this week featuring fun and motivating activities around waste reduction.
“There’ll be a toy swap, a nude food day, workshops on worm farming and fixing things, art-making using recycled materials, a wear-it-green day and a whole school litter blitz,” Abbie said.
“Over the next few months, we will introduce reusable containers for canteen lunch orders, create a system for staff to use their own cups at our local cafe, collect school food waste for composting and engage our Green Team students in leadership training.”
Some classes will also take part in an Oz Harvest program to learn all about food waste and ways they can tackle it in their own lives.
Abby says schools have such great potential to create positive change around the issue of waste.
“It’s all about us changing patterns in behaviour, from students and staff right up to parents and the rest of the community,” she said.
