School crossing urged urgently

CANTERBURY Bankstown Council will investigate the placement of a pedestrian crossing at Kingsgrove North High School or other action to improve the safety for students, after claims the lack of an appropriate crossing has been putting lives at risk.

Councillor Barbara Coorey (pictured right, with concerned parents) said many students were crossing St Albans Road in between two safe crossings because they were “just too far apart”.
She said “it beggars belief” that at least three teachers had to stand in the afternoon to ensure students did not cross the road and use either the crossing at the end of the school or the lights.
Cr Coorey joined the call for a pedestrian crossing outside the main gate of the school as a matter of urgency.
“The students crossing St Albans Road anywhere in a 150-metre stretch of road with a lot of cars picking up students in the afternoon, makes it very dangerous,” she said.
“Students are entitled to have a safe crossing and parents are entitled to have peace of mind that their children are safe as they exit the school homeward bound.”
Parent Rena Malatestas said it would only take some paint, white lines and a sign – “It would only take a few hours”.
“Many times parents have watched children almost run over before and after school,” she said.
“This is not a major task. This is not an expensive task. But it is urgent and will ensure that children have safety each day going to and from school.”
