Scams $25,000 from senior

A BANKSTOWN man who allegedly defrauded an elderly woman of almost $25,000, has been charged after being arrested outside her Harrington Park home last Monday.

Earlier this month, an 81-year-old woman was contacted via a social media messaging service by a person purporting to be from a law enforcement agency.
After speaking to the person online, the woman was convinced to disclose personal information before being contacted by phone by a person claiming to be an agent from the Australian Federal Police.
As instructed, the woman attended a bank branch on two separate occasions to withdraw over $24,000. On each occasion, an agent named ‘Alex’ attended her home to collect the money as arranged.
Bank staff notified police after the woman again attended a bank branch at Narellan last Monday.
The 36-year-old man charged with two counts of obtain property by deception, attempt to obtain property by deception and recklessly deal with proceeds of crime.

Hiding after pursuit, crash
THE driver of a car allegedly involved in several police pursuits last Friday, was found hiding in a backyard after fleeing when the car crashed in Beverly Hills.
Just before 4pm last Friday, police attempted to stop a Mercedes Benz on Castlereagh Street in Liverpool. It’s alleged the vehicle failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated before being terminated a short time later due to safety concerns.
Further pursuits were initiated and terminated as the Mercedes travelled through Chipping Norton, Milperra and Peakhurst, before it crashed into another vehicle on Stoney Creek Road, Beverly Hills, and was subsequently stopped.
The male passenger of the vehicle was arrested at the scene and the driver fled on foot through a number of properties, but was found hiding in the backyard of a home on Lee Street.
The 23-year-old Alexandria man was charged with drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, three counts of police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, three counts of drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, two counts of not give particulars to other driver, enter inclosed land not prescribed premises without lawful excuse and not comply with noticed direction re s7/8/9/ – Covid-19.
The passenger was released.
