With less than a month to go until the best of the best meet again in the ACT for the 2023 Australian National Flyball Championships on September 23 and 24, Scallywags will send two teams this year to represent Western Sydney and defend their 2022 and 2021 titles.
An amazing sport which dogs love, flyball involves four-legged competitors speeding over four jumps before hitting a board, grabbing a tennis ball and returning to the start, ready for the next team-mate, all in the fastest time possible.
Club co-ordinator Jenni Redmond said flyball involved dogs of all shapes, sizes and ages.
Often described as drag-racing for dogs, the team event comprises four dogs racing with two reserves in waiting.
“The first team to get their four dogs back are pronounced winners of that heat; it’s all about teamwork between the dogs and their handlers,” Jenni said.
Teams competing in the championships will be divided into divisions based on experience, making the competition fairer for all involved.
Scallywags train at Princes Park in Auburn on Sundays, weather permitting, unless competing, with all dog lovers – even if you don’t have a furry friend – invited to come along for a fun day out.

Scallywags to defend title win
IT’S fast and furious on the field, with some competitors even known to lift a leg on the grass in defiance but all is forgiven when you’re previous national flyball champions as are a group of canines from Auburn’s Sydney Scallywags club.
