Scallywags score second, third in Flyball at nationals

THEY were not crowned grand national champions this year but Auburn-based Sydney Scallywags still reached the podium coming second and third in two divisions – out of 50 teams from around the nation – at the recent Australian National Flyball Championships in Canberra.

Called the Scallywag Scoundrels, Poppet, Bowie, Olive, Jett, Gage and Benny were a close second in division 7 while Scallywag Terrors comprising Ziggy, Mouse, Gage, Skittles, Olive and Romeo, took out third place in the open division, with the division grading based on competition seed times entered for each team.
Sydney Scallywags co-ordinator Jenni Redmond said it was bitterly cold at night and sweltering during the day but the dogs were all champions and did them proud.
“We all had battled injuries and adverse situations leading up to these nationals but in true Scallywag spirit, just gave it a go and what a go we had,” she said.
“It was a privilege to be a part of it and even more special to finish on the podium.”
An amazing sport which dogs love, flyball involves four-legged competitors speeding over four jumps before hitting a board, grabbing a tennis ball and returning to the start, ready for the next team-mate, all in the fastest time possible.
Scallywags train at Princes Park in Auburn on Sundays, with all dog lovers – even if you don’t have a furry friend – invited to come along for a fun day out especially on October 29 for their Halloween competition event, ‘Skulls and Crossbones’, sponsored by Farmers Mate 4 Pets and True colours pet food.
