Scallywags have fun enjoying sport with furry friends of all ages, breeds

THE pandemic has given some dog owners extra bonding time with their four-legged friends but Sydney Scallywags Flyball club co-ordinator Jenni Redmond says as restrictions ease, it’s time to let the dogs out to play.

“Now the time has come for many to go back to work and our furry friends are being left at home and some may be getting bored and a little lost without their every day companions,” she said.
“So why not reward your best friend and introduce them to flyball.”
“Flyball is a sport that dogs love to get involved in, it involves running, jumping, retrieving and socialising with other four legged friends.”
Describing the sport as “drag racing for dogs”, Ms Redmond said all breeds of dogs, both big and small, are encouraged to give it a try, with dogs able to start training from 16 weeks provided they have had all their vaccinations, and to start competing from 18 months of age.
She said older dogs could also join the fun with some starting at the sport as late as 10 years of age.
“There are four dogs in a team, and all dogs can have a go. Speed is not the most important thing, fun is,” she said.
“To see them out there tails wagging, barking and wanting to do their very best is the greatest reward for any dog owner.”
Club members train at Princes Park oval every Sunday, unless away at a competition and weather permitting.
