Scallywags beat nation

A GROUP of six dogs from Auburn-based Sydney Scallywags, have been crowned Australian Flyball National Champions after winning 11 out of 12 races over two days last weekend in the ACT and winning first place in division 6.

This follows their efforts at the Canberra Royal Show earlier this month where they won the first day of the open division and equal first on the second day, awarded second overall after a count-back.
The team consisted of ‘Poppet’, five-year-old Kelpie, Border Collie cross handled by Karen Bland; Bowie, a five-year-old Koolie, Jack Russell cross handled by John Redmond; ‘Mouse’, a three-year-old German Shepherd handled by Jenni Redmond; ‘Olive’, a three-year-old Tamaruke handled by Brooke Bradley; ‘Mojo’, a 12-year-old Kelpie Terrier cross handled by Garry Greenwood; and ‘Ziggy’, a two-year-old Tenterfield Terrier handled by John Redmond.
Each dog takes relay turns to jump four hurdles, retrieve a tennis ball from the flyball box by triggering it and then jumping back over the hurdles to complete their lap – all in the fastest time possible.
Sydney Scallywags Flyball Club co-ordinator Jenni Redmond says they are incredibly proud of their dogs which have put Auburn on the map, bringing home the trophy and the medals.
“They ran they’re legs off, it was an amazing effort. We extend an invitation to those wanting to learn flyball as now is the time to start,” she said.
The group trains at Princes Park, Auburn, on Sundays with all dogs welcome.
