Scallywags unleash fun again

AN extreme sport, flyball is to dogs what abseiling is to humans – super fast, super technical and super fun for the animal and the owner.

Sydney Scallywags Flyball Club co-ordinator Jenni Redmond says the sport’s four-legged competitors must learn a series of tricks including speeding over three jumps before hitting a board, grabbing a tennis ball and returning to the start, ready for the next team-mate, all in the fastest time possible.
She said the canine team sport was founded on the activities that dogs love to do – running, jumping, fetching and most of all, pleasing their owners, adding that it is pure fun for everyone, from the dogs and handlers, to the spectators.
“After the Covid-induced break we are all thrilled to get back to our Sunday morning training again at Princes Park in Auburn,” she said.
“Any dog; regardless of breed, size, shape or formal training, can participate and join in on the fun. Flyball does not interfere with obedience training. In fact, the sport reinforces the disciplines taught in obedience classes.
“Sydney Scallywags have a Covid safety plan, and look forward to training for the remainder of the year weather permitting now, with upcoming competitions on the way too, including the Australian Flyball Championships in the ACT in March.
“We will be taking at least one team of six dogs and beginners and singles and pairs racing will be held; it’s such a fantastic opportunity for new dogs.
“Most of us all camp together, three days of crazy fun and very tired and sore after but we love every minute and so do the dogs.”
