Salvos re-open Villawood doors

ALONG with the hub’s garden which was neglected and has gone haywire after being padlocked off in Covid, Salvation Army Villawood staff have noticed a huge disconnection among local residents since re-opening their doors earlier this month.

Still operating out of a hall on DCJ Housing Estate at 7 Urana Street, Salvos’ Major Paul Moulds who is the site’s team leader, says he and outreach officer Laurie Besant and counsellor Roger Boothby are on hand Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9am-4pm, and are very keen to reconnect with the local community.
Hosting a community barbecue last week, they were very pleased to connect with many familiar and some new faces.
“We don’t have our full programs back yet but are operating a hamper service, supported living packages and emergency relief,” Paul said.
“As we get more settled, we will be introducing social engagement initiatives to help improve lifestyles.
“We want local residents to regard the centre as theirs, as they used to, and not ours; it has been sad to see all the neighbourhood’s doors closed and blinds pulled but we can help and want people to feel that it is safe to come out again.”
Run by the Salvation Army in partnership with Mission Australia and local social housing groups, Villawood Salvos would love to hear from anyone experiencing hardship or loneliness or who is just seeking company.
