Safer streets for pedestrians, drivers

GETTING around has become a lot safer and easier for pedestrians and drivers with Canterbury Bankstown Council carrying out a number of footpath, road and bridge upgrades.

Inspecting several of the projects, Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said Council is committed to not only maintaining but improving Canterbury-Bankstown’s huge 900 plus kilometre road network.
“Whether you’re walking, cycling, driving or catching public transport, these upgrades are aimed at making travelling around our City easier and safer,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“The safety of our community is first and foremost.”
Works begun in May 2023 include:
• Bonds Road, Riverwood – footpath and bus pad upgrade.
• Draper Avenue, Roselands – construction of a pedestrian refugee island, footpath upgrade, minor stormwater drainage works and road resurfacing.
• Fairview Avenue, Roselands – construction of a pedestrian refugee island, footpath upgrade, minor stormwater works and road resurfacing.
• Fifth Avenue, Campsie – in conjunction with Burwood Council, construction of cyclist and pedestrian safety railing, construction of footpath, kerbs and gutters, median island and road resurfacing.
• Fisher Lane, Narwee – footpath upgrade and construction of pram ramp.
• French Avenue, Bankstown – footpath and drainage upgrade.
• Horsley Road, Panania – construction of speed humps and pedestrian refugee islands.
• Josephine Street, Riverwood – in conjunction with Georges River Council, installation of speed humps.
• Leigh Avenue, Roselands – footpath upgrade and minor drainage works.
• Thompson Road, Panania – construction of speed humps and raised platform, footpath upgrade and installation of fencing.
• Yanderra Street, Condell Park – construction of speed humps, footpath upgrade and road resurfacing.
As part of Council’s draft Operational Plan for 2023/24, it has proposed to spend $57.2 million on capital works across the City, including $11 million on road, car park, bridge and traffic upgrades.
