At current burial rates, areas for the Muslim and Eastern Orthodox communities, will run out of burial land within the next two to three years.
“If pre-need burial rights were made available for sale, burial land at RGC for these communities would run out within a matter of months,” OneCrown Cemeteries Administrator Lee Shearer said.
“We therefore sell these areas for at-need families only, to ensure we continue to meet community needs.”
To address this issue, Ms Shearer said they were working on new developments within their gates that would enable them to continue to service these communities into the future.
“This includes working steadily to meet the provision of available and affordable interments for all communities, equity for all religious and cultural beliefs and long-term sustainability at all our sites,” she said.
Catholic Cemeteries + Crematoria, however, has secured new burial land with the purchase of two DA approved cemeteries, including the 113ha Macarthur Memorial Park in the Campbelltown area and the 44ha Nepean Gardens in the Penrith area.
“The trust has guaranteed religious and cultural groups, such as Jews and Muslims, their own burial grounds in the new cemeteries to be created,” a CCC spokesperson said.
Rookwood so short on burial spaces ‘no pre-buying policy’
ROOKWOOD Cemetery is so short of plots that some religions are no longer allowed to pre-buy them, as they would sell out and leave no room for the newly deceased.
