Former boxing coach and Lakemba resident Peter Andary is new to the sport but looking to pit himself against some of the country’s best in the super heavyweight (95kg+) class.
“I was looking for something competitive to do and armwrestling seemed like a natural move for me as my father is Lebanese and it’s very popular culturally,” he said.
“It’s big too in the USA and Eastern Europe where they have armwrestling academies.
“In fact some of my friends who will be competing at the championships, have trained overseas so the audience will be in for a great show of talent and experience.”
Like with other sports, the 31-year-old said you’ve got to master certain skills to avoid injury.
“I love how armwrestling is one on one combat and that there is nowhere to hide; it’s technical, powerful and psychological, a challenge but just so enjoyable,” he said.
Andary says he hopes he has what it takes to go far in armwrestling.
“But for now, I’m trying to take a few scalps and build up my experience along the way both locally and nationally,” he said.
Catch armwrestling at its best at Bankstown RSL on Saturday, July 23, 11am-7pm.
