Risk tragedy without a crossing

AFTER seeing many near misses – and being involved in a few of his own – Newington’s Tim Vincent is leading the charge for a pedestrian crossing or island to be installed where busy Oceania Boulevard is crossed by the Louise Sauvage Pathway.

Mr Vincent and his family often use the pathway but he fears a tragedy if nothing is done to increase safety for those crossing at Oceania Boulevard.
The popular pathway attracts lots of walkers, runners, cyclists, dog walkers and parents with strollers, but their safety is “being put at risk very time they cross the busy road”.
Mr Vincent has started a petition calling for Parramatta Council to install a pedestrian crossing or island.
He says both approaches on Oceania Boulevard to the pathway intersection, have blind corners and it will only be a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
The petition says “given the increased heavy traffic flow and often excessive speeds by some motorists using this road as either a means to access Holker Street, Silverwater or by residential traffic, this location presents a dangerous crossing point”.
Many of the path users agree, including Janine, who lives locally and has “seen and been involved in many near misses. I don’t let my children cross here alone as it’s just too dangerous”, while Lorena said she had almost been hit on multiple occasions, and Philip, who said it was a “dangerous crossing for children and families on bikes and it’s a blind spot for drivers”.
