Bike South West Inc Secretary Sue Artlett says they are not permitted to run organised rides at the moment and cyclists must stay within five kilometres of their home.
“There is controversy over the new ‘mask-wearing while cycling rule’ as some people say that should fall under the ‘vigorous exercise’ category but you get used to wearing one,” she said.
“The area limit too can be tricky but living in Panania, we can just get to Lake Gillawarna and the Georges River National Park; there’s really plenty of great options if you live in Canterbury Bankstown.”
Sue says now is the time to explore streets and paths close to your home.
“During these restrictions, many of our members are sharing their individual loop rides with each other on exercise apps such as Strava to motivate and encourage each other,” she said.
“This is one way that our group is staying connected.
“There will be organised recreational group rides again with our group after this crisis and we hope many may wish to join us to explore further afield once restrictions are lifted.”
These rides are free and you can find out more at bikesouthwest.org.au/rides.
Also riding out Covid is Pedal Patch Panania owner Nick who ran out of bikes last lockdown but is better prepared this time around.
“I’ve got plenty of bikes in the $600 to $1,000 range but not much above that,” he said.
“Cycling is really enjoying a boom but there are supply issues because of Covid.
“Cycling is the safest and best option to have fun while exercising and I’m really enjoying seeing all the family groups about.”
Riding out pandemic
HELPING to keep fitness levels high and the perfect way to escape lockdown, cycling is enjoying a surge in popularity but you have to wear a mask and you can only ride in pairs unless in a family group.
