“I’m so excited the Rhinos have an all-girls team this year and look forward to playing with my new team mates,” she said.
Founded in 1963, the Rhinos are a community focused club who always put their players first but had concerns about the future when they could only field four teams in 2018.
However, in an amazing turnaround, thanks to the efforts of hard-working club volunteers and officials, this year they have nine teams including the first ever U14s girls team.
Coach Sonia Defina says she is thrilled to support these young woman athletes in following their dreams of playing rugby league.
“Women’s rugby league will have a successful future with girls like ours coming up the ranks,” she said.
“Already these girls have formed a strong bond of friendship which is what team sport is all about.
“Some girls are playing two years above their age but it doesn’t stop them being competitive, strong and brave to do so.”
Club President and Head Coach Paul Sawaqed said he looked forward to celebrating their successes.
“We are very excited to have these enthusiastic girls come together to show their talents and share their passion for rugby league,” he said.
It’s not too late to join this year with players of all ages welcome.
