Participation & Programs Manager NSW/ACT Dylan Potter said that being able to offer the inclusive format to the Auburn community, where interest in the game was growing through schools, clubs and NAB AFL Auskick centres, was a big step forward for them.
He said engaging in sports had significant health and wellbeing benefits for young people and offering this program, ensured the game was open and accessible for everyone.
“Being able to remove barriers, such as registration fees, especially when families are feeling the rising cost of living, provides an avenue for kids to stay in sport, have fun and stay connected to their community,” he said.
“It’s great to note as well that out of the registered participants as of this week, 143 participants had a parent born overseas and seven registrants identified as living with a disability as this program is suitable for all cultural backgrounds and open to all.”
The program is running for the next three weeks at Mona Park on Thursdays, 4.45-5.45pm.
