Adam Abdallah was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and affray, and will remain behind bars until his next court appearance in June.
It will be alleged the 25-year-old confronted the referee Khodr Yaghi, at the conclusion of the match between the Greenacre Eagles and Padstow Hornets and punched him multiple times in the face and kicked him in the head.
Injured referee Yaghi had surgery on his jaw on Monday and said from his hospital bed yesterday that he was happy to be the victim of abuse and assault if it helped bring about change.
“Not enough is being done to crackdown on violence against referees; change should have happened earlier as they have done with body cameras in England,” he said.
“At the moment, abusers get banned for a couple of weeks and then come back and hit the ref again.”
However, Yaghi says he has no plans to quit.
“I will be refereeing until I die,” he said.
“But I am really sore and wouldn’t wish this on anyone; the abuse needs to stop.”
The Greenacre Eagles FC has withdrawn their Men’s Premier League team from the 2023 competition.
