A RECORD number of Catholics braved chilly conditions to take part in the 2023 Corpus Christi Procession in a joint effort between St Jerome’s Catholic Church, St John’s Melkite Catholic and St Charbel’s Maronite Catholic Church.
Starting at St Johns in Greenacre walking behind the Blessed Sacrament before making their way to St Charbel’s in Punchbowl for the Benediction and Mass, the 800-strong crowd were joined on June 8 by onlookers and neighbouring residents with requests for statue blessings, even a footy team stopped training and joined parishioners.
A spokesperson said that though there were hundreds involved, with the incense flowing and the candlelight flames, the atmosphere was intimate and very holy.
“There was just so much community spirit and St Chabel’s Father Michael Sandrousi, who was enjoying the local procession for the first time, said he had goosebumps throughout the evening; he was amazed at such a massive show of faith,” the spokesperson said.
