Reading trail for preschool children with activity, book

RESEARCH shows that a child’s ability to learn to read and write at school is set in the first five years of life – the first three years, in fact, school is too late.

If children start school without early literacy skills, no matter how good the teaching, these initial cognitive gaps increase as children go through school, according to Bankstown Community Resource Group’s (BCRG) Community Development Officer Anna Certoma. With this in mind, BCRG will be hosting its first Community Reading Trail on Wednesday, September 13, 10am-12pm.
Starting at Bankstown Arts Centre and ending at Bankstown Library Reading Garden, it’s free and will include book giveaways.
“The purpose of the ‘trail’ is to show that early literacy can be embedded into everyday experiences like checking out the neighbourhood and it should be heaps of fun for parents and their children,” Anna said.
