Queen’s Baton Relay thrills

MAKING an epic journey across the Commonwealth visiting all 72 nations and territories, the Queen’s Baton Relay arrived in Auburn last Saturday, stopping off at Wyatt Park to meet Parramatta Auburn Netball Association (PANA) members (pictured).
Despite the wet weather, more than 50 children and their parents descended on the Association’s netball courts at Wyatt Park in Percy Street – only one of four locations in NSW selected for the Baton’s arrival.
To celebrate the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, from July 28 to August 8, the Queen’s Baton journey had gotten underway in early October.
PANA Junior Representative Coach and Baton Relay Organiser Amy Nolan said it was a very exciting morning.
“As an Association, you don’t get to be a part of something so big very often, so we were definitely keen to be there and be involved,” she said.
With netball one of the major sports at the upcoming Commonwealth Games, two Australian Diamond stars Paige Hadley and Sarah Klau were also on hand to welcome the Queen’s Baton to town.
“Our young players loved having the stars there,” Nolan said.

“It was such a privilege to be directly involved in something so large that only happens once every four years and be one of the few stops in the NSW leg of the journey.”
After its trip to Auburn, the Queen’s Baton then made its way to Melbourne for a two-day stopover and has now arrived in Belize in Central America.
With the PANA winter season starting on April 30, there are still some clubs looking for players to fill teams.
