At the request of Councillor Kun Huang and some nearby residents, the council will investigate the feasibility of closing a section of the street from Swete Street and Rawson Street in Lidcombe to consolidate Swete Street Park and the open space area adjacent.
It would also look at options to improve the flow of traffic in that area and identify funding options to facilitate the design and construction of the park upgrade.
Cr Huang said recreational green space was not just a luxury but a necessity for a healthy and thriving community, especially with so much high-rise and development in the area.
“Green space offers a refuge from the stresses of urban living, offers a place for families to gather and a space for children to play and connect with nature,” he said.
Critical of the proposal, Cr Helen Hughes said that while open space was needed in the area, “this location is not practical”.
“I have passionately been pushing for more open space, but this not the location for it,” she said.
She said speeding motorists and parking were big concerns and there were other nearby areas that would be more suitable for open space.
Cr Huang said the proposal would include exploring options to make the roads safer.
