“I want to be very clear, in all the decisions I have ever made, my first consideration has always been the well-being and welfare of the people of this State,” she said.
“History will demonstrate that I have always executed my duties with the highest degree of integrity.”
She said she had made it clear that if any ministers were the subject of allegations being investigated by an integrity agency or law-enforcement, then he or she should stand aside until their name was cleared.
“However, standing aside is not an option for me as the Premier,” she said.
“The people of NSW need certainty as to who their leader is during these challenging times.
“My resignation will take effect as soon as the NSW Liberal party can elect a new Parliamentary leader.
“I love my job, and serving the community, but I have been given no option.
“My only regret is not being able to finish the job to ensure the people of NSW transition to living freely with Covid.”
She thanked the Liberal Party, electorate of Willoughby who elected her five times to be their MP, colleagues, staff, family and friends.
“Most importantly I want to thank you, the people of NSW,” she said.
“When the chips were down, in particular during the drought, bushfires and then Covid, we stood alongside each other.
“The courage that you display in your lives every day has inspired me every step of the way.
“Thank you again for giving me the honour of being your Premier.”
Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou said he was surprised by Ms Berejiklian’s resignation and thanked her for her contributions, particularly during the pandemic.
“I hope that the new leader will bring a thorough understanding of western Sydney and appreciate the challenges we face and see the enormous potential of our area,” he said.
