Canterbury Bankstown Council has joined a number of Sydney councils to promote GreenPower – a government accredited and audited green energy program – and has suggested residents look at getting on board.
While it “may be a little more expensive than standard electricity”, according to the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator, because it is part of building completely new infrastructure for the grid – and will get cheaper – Canterbury Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said the program provided sustainable energy alternatives to homeowners and renters alike, especially those who could not install solar panels.
“Switching to a 100 per cent accredited GreenPower electricity plan is the best thing you can do for our planet,” Mayor El-Hayek said.
“It’s your fastest way to go renewable, especially if you rent or live in an apartment.
“You can switch your electricity plan to a GreenPower accredited plan if you rent, own, live in an apartment, house or run a business.”
GreenPower electricity plans are available through more than 10 energy providers in Sydney and residents are able to switch to a GreenPower plan in as little as 10 minutes.
“GreenPower accredited plans are not always more expensive than traditional electricity plans,” the Mayor said.
“The aim of this campaign is not to pressure our residents, but to let them know that there are other options available if they’re interested.
“As always, they should shop around and compare prices, and find a solution that best meets their family’s and household’s needs.”
“It’s about giving people an alternative choice.”
Mayor El-Hayek said said that many electricity companies were pushing their customers to sign up to a carbon neutral plan … “but a GreenPower accredited plan is a much better option”.
“GreenPower electricity plans guarantees investment in more renewable energy, like wind and solar farms. It’s one of easiest ways you can reduce dirty emissions.”
