This is the first time the competition has been held nationally and there were hundreds of entries from students across Australia.
The second-place entry in the Years 5-6 category depicts a Pied Oystercatcher, a resident shorebird that breeds from October to January, laying 2-3 eggs directly on the sand in a shallow hole called a scrape.
Taylor’s imaginative poster shows the significant threat to this beautiful bird. The eggs and chicks are well camouflaged against the sand and are susceptible to accidental trampling.
Discovery Centre Leader, Rod Dowler, said the judges were impressed by the efforts and dedication demonstrated by the students.
“We received a very high calibre of entries this year, from across the country, all with powerful messages on how we can protect our precious shorebirds,” Dr McCready said.
“This is the first time we have run this competition nationally and I would like to thank every student and teacher that entered and congratulate Taylor on her impressive second place entry.”
Three other local students impressed the judges, with Yasmin Najjar from Chullora Public School highly commended for her work, while Benny Lin from Panania and Jouri Oudtallah from Chullora Public School were also commended for their entries.
