Auburn Police Commander, Superintendent Danielle Emerton said it was a “tragic, senseless act” and although no-one has been charged with the attack, it’s believed the brawl may have been motivated by postcode gang wars and “someone knows who has done this”.
Security has been ramped up at the Easter Show after the fatal stabbing of a teenager last Monday night during a violent brawl.
Emergency services were called to the carnival ride section about 8pm after reports of a fight and found two youths, aged 16 and 17, suffering stab wounds, one critically injured.
Police rendered first aid until paramedics arrived and treated them at the scene, however, the older boy died on route while the younger boy remains in hospital, receiving treatment.
Police believe it was not a “random attack” and the brawl may have been motivated by postcode gang wars.
Auburn Police Commander, Superintendent Danielle Emerton, said police were trying to piece together what happened on the night.
It’s a tragic, senseless act. This is a family event and the fact that someone has bought a knife into the show is upsetting,” she said.
“There were two groups involved in the affray incident where there was a knife involved. So we are looking at additional people that were involved in last night’s attack.”
Show organisers said they shocked and saddened following the tragic loss of life and offered their sympathies to the family and loved ones of the deceased person.
“The RAS does not tolerate or condone any violence or anti-social behaviour and we join with NSW Police and the wider community in condemning this appalling behaviour and unnecessary loss of life,” a spokesperson said.
A 15-year-old boy who was arrested nearby a short time later and was allegedly in possession of a knife, was charged with affray, armed with intent to commit indictable offence, and custody of knife in public place.
Police are appealing for anyone with information or vision of the incident, to come forward and contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
