Post office closure to hurt ‘thousands’

IN a sign of the times as more people move to online banking, well-known landmark in the local area Campsie Post Office will close its doors next month.

“Australia Post has made the difficult decision to close the Campsie Post Shop from June 14 this year following a 20 per cent fall in customer visits over the past five years,” an Australia Post spokesperson said.
“The surrounding area is well-serviced, with 12 post offices within a three-kilometre radius, including the Belmore Post Office being one train stop away.
“More than 720 post office boxes will remain at the current location within the Campsie Centre. All team members will be offered roles at surrounding outlets or closer to home.”
However, one customer Rob Ryan says he can’t understand why.
“Campsie is a densely populated, busy suburb,” he said.
“It will get even more busy following the opening of the metro line, and the rezonings to attract more residents.”
He said he felt Australia Post was being short-sighted.
“It’s always busy in there, there’s always a queue so I really can’t understand how they’ve reached this decision as it’s only going to get busier in Campsie,” he said.
“This is such a blow to the local area, it’s going to inconvenience thousands of people; the closest might be in Belmore but that’s not easy to get to, it’s not as simple as just jumping on a train for the elderly.”
