Plenty knit but sewing up bear help’s needed

KNITTING up a storm for over 30 years and creating a wonderful array of cute bandaged bears to help comfort sick children, Padstow Red Cross volunteers now need a little bit of help themselves.

“We have quite a few knitters,” Lorraine Newnham explained.
“But we need sewers who put together the bodies, stuff them and sew on the faces.
“Most of our knitters are happy to do only that, knitting while watching TV, for example but few sew as well.
“In the last year alone, we have delivered over 1,900 bears to the two local hospitals, local ambulance stations and paediatric pathology centres and we’re told when a sick or traumatised child comes in, our little bears can make all the difference.
“We are desperate for more people to help with the assembly of the bears. Panania Library knitters are a great help and support us with sewers but that’s it.
“When the bears are completed, people can drop them off at our shop at 13 Howard Road or give me a call and I can come and collect them.
“If anyone is happy to assemble and finish them, I can drop them off and collect too; any assistance received would be greatly appreciated.”
