Playing it cool as heat hits

HOT play equipment could soon be a thing of the past.

A playground in the Merrylands Memorial Park has been retro-fitted with UV smart materials which could see temperatures halve on the site.
It follows a research partnership between Cumberland City Council and the Western Sydney University, led by Dr Sebastian Pfautsch, which found that communities in western Sydney experience extreme heat more frequently than previously known, with temperatures of play equipment hitting nearly 80 degrees Celsius.
“The UV Smart, Cool Playground project has brought together government, industry and research partners to develop Australia’s first prototype playground to address increasing temperatures which are leaving our playgrounds unplayable,” Dr Pfautsch said.
“The adaption of existing playgrounds is an important way to reduce urban heat loads.”
Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou said they were “delighted to be pioneers” in creating a safe space for children and their families.
“The new UV Smart Cool Playground cleverly combines new technology and physical play in an innovative environment for the community,” Cr Christou said.
The $106,000 prototype project was supported by Local Government NSW and grants funded by the NSW Government, with softfall material donated by Polysoft and shade cover donated by Alfresco Shade and GALE Pacific.
