Plan to transform Bankstown Central into shopping mecca

THE multi-million dollar transformation of Bankstown Central into one of Sydney’s best ‘destination shopping centres’ is a step closer.

Vicinity Centres’ masterplan to redevelop the shopping centre into a “mixed-use neighbourhood” was endorsed by Canterbury Bankstown Council to proceed to Gateway Determination, which is the next phase of the planning approval process.
A spokesperson for Vicinity Centres says this is a major step in realising their vision to transform the heart of Bankstown’s town centre into a city of the future, providing a place where residents can work, live, stay, dine and shop.
“It’s a vote of confidence in Vicinity’s commitment to investing in the future of Bankstown’s CBD by integrating office and retail space, surrounded by a mix of retail venues, wellness and co-working spaces, food and beverage venues, and public and landscaped, green open spaces,” she said.
The development will include a number of towers ranging from 35 to 86 metres and include commercial offices, new retail space, open space with a playground and urban plaza, and ‘Incubator Space’ for business ‘start-ups’, and housing for approximately 2,500 new residents.
It would also include a multi-purpose indoor facility including two sports courts or cash contribution up to a value of $4 million to the council.
A council report stated that the development would have an overall positive impact.
