Pies push hard against seasoned foe

☐ Youth girls NSW Academy Champion representatives Sibella Sarraf, Charlie Somboli, Freya Taylor, Ella Heads and Madeline Convery.

SATURDAY saw another great day of football for the Inner West Magpies at Picken Oval.

Kicking off with the Women’s Premier Division, the ladies had a big task ahead of them coming up against UNSW Bulldogs, last year’s premiership winners.
New players Lily Borger and Alannah Kavanagh showed exceptional talent and skill working hard in the back line to shut down the Bulldogs attack and providing many goal saving efforts.
Finishing up the day with a final score of 27-81, the Magpies take a lot of positives from the weekend including a massive improvement on previous years.
Next up was the Men’s Reserves Division again facing up against a well-rehearsed UNSW side. Experienced players Aaron Connelly and Shaun McKiernan worked hard to limit the score line damage from UNSW but faced a difficult challenge. Jayden Lawler-Lewis was listed as best on for the day as well as kicking a goal for the day. UNSW proved too strong on the day for the Magpies with a final score of 22-156.
The final match saw the Men’s Premier division side take on UNSW. The Magpies stood up well against last year’s premiers and made UNSW work hard all the way to the final siren, with UNSW winning 114-75.
Jock White, named best on the day, worked hard across the field and provided plenty of opportunities for the Magpies.
The Inner West Magpies would also like to congratulate youth girls player, and Under 18s captain Berry Fox-Quinn who travelled to Canberra last Sunday as part of the Sydney under 18s academy program.
This weekend also saw Freya Tylor, Madeline Convery, Sibella Sarraf, Charlie Somboli and Ella Heads represent the club travelling to Newcastle to play in the NSW Academy Championship. From here, the girls will look to be selected in either the Sydney Swans or Giants teams that will go head to head to face selection in the State squad.
