Pharmacist to retire after nearly six decades on job

WHEN Ashbury’s Paul Calman started in pharmacy as a 16-year-old in 1966, life expectancy was much shorter.

There were no fluid or blood pressure tablets, asthma or diabetes medications or anti-psychotic drugs for a start.
In the last six decades, Paul has also witnessed his profession moving from a medication compounding focus, to the dispensing of drug manufacturers’ finished products.
“We used to order 12 dozen dispensing bottles at a time for medications we’d make up in-house but there is no need for any bottles now as the drug companies supply all of the medicines,” he said.
“It’s a whole new world and profession these days.
“Gone too are the baby scales but a huge breakthrough was the launch of the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, allowing customers to buy expensive chemo and other medications normally costing thousands of dollars a year, for just $40 or $50.”
As he prepares to hand over the reins to his Panania Pharmacy and retire at 82 this month, Paul says he is grateful to the friends he has made while also operating chemists at East Villawood, Padstow and Picnic Point.
An Apex Life Member, Paul is husband to Judith, father of four, grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of two.
He says he will miss the wonderful rapport he’s had with customers as well as staff, four of which have been with him for over 40 years.
A keen traveller, Paul is looking forward to enjoying a few more cruises: “At the end of the day, it’s all about helping people and I feel lucky to have been able to do that for so many years.”
After suffering a health setback last week, the team wishes him a speedy recovery and look forward to his return in coming days.
