People power win – Australia Post to stay

PEOPLE power has won out and Australia Post is looking for a new location in Auburn’s CBD, after community uproar followed the announcement two weeks ago that the existing shop would be shut.

THE community has had a huge win with Australia Post to remain in Auburn – but in a new location.
The decision follows condemnation from Cumberland Council, residents and MPs about the planned closure of the Auburn shop in late August.
They called on Australia Post CEO Paul Graham and Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland, to reconsider their decision and provide a commitment that no post office locations are proposed for closure in future within Cumberland.
Announcing the win, Federal MP for Blaxland, Jason Clare, thanked everyone who contacted him about this important issue – “this is a great example of people power”.
An Australia Post spokesperson says it is actively searching for a post office size, format and location that will be viable in the longer term for Auburn, and will keep the community updated.
Mayor Lisa Lake said she was really pleased that Australia Post had now acknowledged the strong community need for their services in Auburn and that they were actively searching for an alternative retail location in the suburb.
“The council will, of course, do everything possible to assist them in this search. I’d like to thank our local Federal and State MPs, Jason Clare and Lynda Voltz and all of the active people of Auburn who spoke out so clearly against this closure and the need to maintain an accessible service for this large and growing population.”
Cr Sabrin Farooqui said accessible services were crucial for the community, especially seniors and parents and urged Australia Post to prioritise accessibility when selecting a new location.
