Passing time discovery star of exhibition

SOME are calling it groundhog day but as we experience the ongoing lockdown, we have become more aware of the little things in our daily lives.

A new online exhibition at Bankstown Arts Centre, ‘Time Pass’, explores the experience of ‘passing time’ through the lens of local Vietnamese artists Mylyn Nguyen and Garry Trinh.
This exhibition offers an opportunity to pause, slow down and pay attention to the moments that give us joy and wonder that we normally take for granted.
After becoming fascinated with the skyline of the architecture in and around Bankstown Plaza, Mylyn has created amazing miniature sculptures of the actual buildings after spending a lot of time in the vicinity waiting to collect her mother from work.
“I love the two-level buildings and the fact the council has kept the original facades,” she said.
“Some are art deco and others were built in the 60s, 70s and 80s but they are almost magical and very cool in their own way, with some painted pink, blue and green.
“I’d love for people to see the exhibition, check out my art, wonder if the buildings actually exist and then see the real thing; hopefully I’ve been able to capture their character so that you can identify them.”
Also inspired by the surroundings and the visual output of mass culture, photographer Garry’s instant films have the same, central theme and so the artists decided to combine their solo artworks in the ‘Time Pass’ exhibition.
“We hope to have captured a little bit of history while it’s still there,” Mylyn added.
The exhibition, which includes an interactive map, is on offer until September 4 and can be found at: cb.city/timepass.
