He said the park was a mess, with rubbish strewn everywhere and dumped trolleys, and it wasn’t at all inviting for anyone who wanted to celebrate or commemorate the momentous occasion.
Cr Garrard, who “is a direct descendant of Garrard’s of London, the Crown jewellers – they crafted the crown that was placed on the king’s head”, said he was disgusted at the state of the park in Auburn and a clean up was needed.
“It’s a very very big event, when Australia’s head of state is going through the process of coronation,” he said.
“This is an opportunity to make a statement and clean up the parks.”
Cr Helen Hughes also said she was disappointed to see the park in such an appalling state.
In the lead up to the Coronation of His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort, the council’s cleaning crews hit the parks to make sure they were looking their best.
The King’s Coronation was almost 70 years after his mother’s Coronation on June 2, 1953.
